Sep 25th 2019

Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday that’s notoriety has become more widespread, even in the United States. Not to be confused with Halloween, this is a celebration of life that acknowledges and pays homage to family members who have already passed. It is thought that the dead return home and are greeted with music, food, and other delights.

It is important to note that this is not a somber holiday, but instead, one that is vibrant and lively and filled with sweet indulgences presented as offerings or ofrendas. One such tradition comes in the form of the surprisingly beautiful sugar skulls that are made with a sugar mixture then pressed into molds to harden and dry. These are decorated with icing as well as non-edible decorations such as feathers and colorful foil. The whimsical designs are a great representation of what this holiday is all about.
